Sales of wines

by kvcpk » Fri Jun 18, 2010 2:12 am
Sales of wines declined in the late 1980s, but they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease.

(A) they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease

(B) after the 1991 report that linked a reduced risk of heart disease with a moderate alcohol consumption, particularly red wine, they began growing again

(C) in a 1991 report, moderate alcohol consumption, and particularly of red wine, which was linked with a reduced risk of heart disease, caused them to begin to grow again

(D) with a reduced risk of heart disease linked in a 1991 report with moderate alcohol consumption, in particular red wine, they began growing again

(E) a reduced risk of heart disease linked to moderate alcohol consumption in a 1991 report, and in particular red wine, started them growing again
OA: Later Is "of" implied in B by default?
A is correct...!

In B, consumption, particularly red wine, -> how can particularly red wine, can modify consumption... :)

it can only modify alcohol...

OA is A

But in B, "with a moderate alcohol consumption, particularly red wine"
doesnt it mean "particularly red wine consumption" by default?

i think that "Sales of wines declined in the late 1980s, but they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease."
must be in such order. B violate this. That's why i would go with A

Red wine is not an alcohol consumption but it is a type of alcohol.
The sentence had been correct if "particularly red wine consumption" or "particularly of red wine" would have been there.
Am I correct??

Good question. It took me more than 2 mins to figure out the answer.

The correct answer is A. I had difficulty in noticing the required parallelism.

Sales of wines declined in the late 1980s, they began to grow again after the 1991 report that linked moderate consumption of alcohol, and particularly of red wine, with a reduced risk of heart disease.

The parallelism here is:
moderate consumption of alcohol.
moderate consumption of red wine.

"they began growing again" in B and D is an awkward construction.

C breaks parallelism (moderate alcohol consumption, and particularly of red wine).

In E, "in a 1991 report, and in particular red wine" wrongly suggest that both red wine and 1991 report linked a reduced risk of heart disease with moderate alcohol consumption.

Hope that helps..
