Modifiers - MGMAT-2

by gmattesttaker2 » Thu Aug 16, 2012 2:27 pm
Hello,

This is from MGMAT SC Guide P. 93. I was wondering if you can please tell me why my answer is in-correct. Thank you very much.

For each of these modifiers, (1) identify the word or words, if any, that it modifies, and (2) indicate whether the modifier is correct. If the modifier is incorrect, suggest a way to correct the error

5)
Mary buys cookies made with SugarFree, an artificial sweetener, which tastes as sweet as the corn syrup that her brother loves but where there are fewer calories than in an equivalent amount of corn syrup.

My answer:
Mary buys cookies made with SugarFree, an artificial sweetener, which tastes as sweet as the corn syrup her brother loves but which has fewer calories than in an equivalent amount of corn syrup.

Book answer:
Mary buys cookies made with SugarFree, an artificial sweetener, which tastes as sweet as the corn syrup that her brother loves but which contains fewer calories than does an equivalent amount of corn syrup.
I see one mistake in your answer with regard to parallelism.

Mary buys cookies made with SugarFree, an artificial sweetener, which tastes as sweet as the corn syrup her brother loves but which has fewer calories than in an equivalent amount of corn syrup.

Let's examine the conjoined items:
"an artificial sweetener, which tastes as sweet as the corn syrup (1 - a clause) (...) BUT which has fewer calories (2 -a clause) THAN IN AN EQUIVALENT AMOUNT (3 - a phrase) (...)"

You have conjoined three items:
1. a clause
2. a clause
3. a phrase.

All three items should be either clauses or phrases. However, you need to be consistent and use only one type of a sentence part.
