(A) by whom they were named supposedly because its

Subject: The Glass House Mountains , Plural. "Its" ---Pronoun reference is NOT in agreement in NUMBER.

who is preferable than whom.

(8) by whom they were named supposedly and their

who Vs Whom, Unnecessary use of "and"

(C) naming them supposedly since their

Usage of since Vs Because. Defective usage of Relative pronoun. Prescence of "who" is required.

(D) who so named them supposedly because their

Bingo!!Relative pronoun who properly connects to the person, usage of because to shell out a reason & "their" properly corresponds to the mountains(plural)

(E) who so named it since supposedly their

reasoning to strike out incorrect option C

in C the subject is mountains and naming seems to modify mountains...

remaining reasoning same as the post above....

I'd go with D too :)

E and A are out coz of 'its'

In B why do we require an and ??? weird ! strike it out

Left with D - go for it :)

the s/c is trying to tell y the name of Glass House Mountains is given like that
a) conveys that The Glass House Mountains in Queensland was named on james cook but thats not true ,
i think there is no pronoun error as The Glass House Mountains in Queensland is a phrase and a phrase is always singular

b) conveys that The Glass House Mountains in Queensland was named on james cook but thats not true ,further here is a sub ---pronoun error

c)sub ---pronoun error FOR THEIR+ IN when we insert this option than this portion does not have any sub

D)CORRECT who modifies james cook and the original intended meaning is retained here

e) their is wrng pronou

Here the choice (D).

Passive should always be avoided as much as possible.

(C) is awkward.

Between D and E, Choice D correctly inherits the pronoun antecedent.... mountains.....them.

Hi thephoenix,

I do not agree with you regarding Its and their usage. The possessive pronoun referring to "the Glass House Mountains" should be PLURAL. Hence correct pronoun is 'their' rather 'its'.

Also in ans: E) 'their' is correct but the usage of 'it' is wrong.

I got "D" as well. My reasoning was that there's a rule that says the noun modifiers have to be "touching". So we need the "who" immediately after the noun "James Cook".

Is my understanding correct?

"By whom" is wrong and "who" is correct?
