Hi swerve,

We're told that Car A and car B are driving towards each other along straight line, Car A travels at a constant speed of 60 miles/hr, car B travels at a constant speed of 40 miles/hr and at NOON they are separated by a distance of 300 miles. We're asked for the time at which they meet.

Based on the two speeds, we know that every HOUR the TOTAL distance traveled by the two cars will be 60 miles + 40 miles = 100 miles. Thus, since the distance between the cars at NOON is 300 miles, it will take (300 miles)/(100 miles/hour) = 3 hours for the two cars to meet. Three hours AFTER Noon = 3:00 pm.

Final Answer: B

We can use the following formula:

distance of car A + distance of car B = total distance = 300

We can let the time of car A and car B = t. Thus:

60t + 40t = 300

100t = 300

t = 3

Since they are separated by a distance of 300 miles at noon and they will meet three hours later, then they will meet at 3 p.m.
