I have to go with D because by putting, installing, and carrying are all parallel. Although A also is quite tempting because putting and installing are parallel. So the questions is, did he install the duct that carried, or was a duct carrying. I'm still going with D. What's the OA?

IMO A

since A says duct that carried

E conveys as if fan and the duct together carried heat which is not right.

IMO: E
B - fragment (not connecting words for connecting 2 independent clauses)

C - breaks the parallism by using PASSIVE. It appears the DOER of PUTTING...and WERE INSTALLED are different people

E - breaks parallism (putting...installing...and A DUCT carrying); TWO DUCTS AND A DUCT were installed together (its a compoung noun as per the original sentence), but E breaks them into 2 different entities; Absence of THEN is serious as the original sentence suggests INSTALLTION OF FANS AND DUCT only AFTER PUTTING COMPRESSORS

D - is very close but ABSENCE OF THEN BEFORE installing not OK; furthermore use of CARRYING suggests that CARRYING is parallel with PUTTING...AND INSTALLING. This means all three activties are done by same subject ,BUT the fact is not so. The owner did NOT CARRY the waste, rather duct did. Therefore IMO CARRYING is not correct.

Of the all choices IMO A ,but I think A does miss AND before INSTALLING.

Hi All,

The owner of Steele's Grocery in Osage, Ohio, saved $600 monthly on heat during the winter by putting all his refrigerator air compressors together in an insulated compartment, then installing two fans and a duct that carried waste heat from the compressors into the main part of the store.

Error Analysis

1. Since the grocery store owner performed two actions one after the other, "then" shows so clearly.
2. "by putting..." and "(by) installing..." are parallel.
3. Relative pronoun "that" correctly refers to "a duct".
4. This sentence is correct as is and "A" is the OA.

POE:

Choice A: then installing two fans and a duct that carried: Correct for the reasons stated above.

Choice B: then he installing two fans and a duct that carried: Incorrect.
1. In the presence of "he" that becomes the subject, ""installing" is not a verb because continuous tense requires is/am/are/was/were + verb+ing to form a continuous tense.
2. Also now "by putting..." and "he installing..." are not parallel.

Choice C: then two fans were installed with a duct that carried: Incorrect. Use of passive makes "by putting..." and "were installed" non-parallel.

Choice D: installing two fans, and then carrying through a duct: Incorrect. This choice means that the grocery store owner himself carried the heat through the duct.

Choice E: installing two fans, and a duct carrying: Incorrect. This choice violates the list of parallelism. Now the entities in the list are "by putting...", "(by) installing...", and "a duct".

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
