Salacious publication!!!

by success1111 » Tue May 05, 2009 1:00 am
Advertisers are often criticized for their unscrupulous manipulation of people’s tastes and wants. There is evidence, however, that some advertisers are motivated by moral as well as financial considerations. A particular publication decided to change its image from being a family newspaper to concentrating on GMAT and violence, thus appealing to a different readership. Some advertisers withdrew their advertisements from the publication, and this must have been because they morally disapproved of publishing salacious material.

Which one of the following, if true, would most strengthen the argument?

(A) The advertisers switched their advertisements to other family newspapers.

(B) Some advertisers switched from family newspapers to advertise in the changed publication.

(C) The advertisers expected their product sales to increase if they stayed with the changed publication, but to decrease if they withdrew.

(D) People who generally read family newspapers are not likely to buy newspapers that concentrate on GMAT and violence.

(E) It was expected that the changed publication would appeal principally to those in a different income group.
Trust but verify.

IMO C.

The conclusion of this stimulus is that even though many advertisers are unscrupulously money driven, they do have some sort of a moral backbone in them.

choice C fits here b/c it strengthens the fact that even though money and manipulation is big part of their game, they would rather withdraw b/c of their moral conscious.

Can some one Plz explain (C) again , where is it talking about moral values left in advertisers , it says that sales will increase if they stayed with publication (Money factor) . Assuming conclusion is " some advertisers are motivated by moral as well as financial considerations".

Hi Mayur Sand

Here we need to also consider the products that the advertisers are advertising.. Option A says that the advertisers who left this newspaper advertised in other family newsparers. This means that they could be advertising for products which would be bought by this audience. Hence they did so.. Here advertisers are acting on financial grounds (not so much on moral grounds)

C clearly says that the advertisers who withdrew know that their advertising in this new newspaper will give them profits .. Inspite of that they are withdraing.. hence they are sacrificing this gains is only for moral standards.. Strengthens the argument..

I am leaning more towards C, but I'm not sure about it.
