Main Point= What is the main idea that the author is trying to address? What is the author trying to tell you about the subject at hand. Main idea is the whole passage and what the author wants to get across.
Primary Purpose= The authors reason for writing the passage. Why did the author take his or her time to write the passage. What does the author want you to learn from this passage.
That's my thought on the difference.
Anyone else?
