660 score, worth applying?

by kiransharma » Sun Sep 15, 2013 12:47 pm
Hi.
my gmat score I'd 660 (quant 57 percentile, verbal 88 percentile) I'm a female, from India And have 10 years of work experience in HR consulting and partnership with companies like Adobe (3 yrs), Aon Hewitt (5 yrs).
I have a masters degree in HR from an Indian University with a GPA of 3.5 plus my undergrad is in Mathematics with a GPA of 3.6.

Do I have a shot at 1 year programs at Stanford, Kellogg, insead? Any chance of other ivy league schools like Harvard, Wharton?

Please advise if I should look at some other schools?

Thankd

Hi kiransharma,

What were your Scaled Scores for the Quant and Verbal sections on your GMAT?

Since you're asking "admissions" questions, you might do better to post this in the Professional Admissions Advice Forum.

You've mentioned many of the Top-5 US schools; each of these programs is remarkably competitive (the rejection rate hovers around 90% for each), so while a 660 is a solid GMAT score, you might consider retesting.

Hello!
I usually advise my students to apply to at least one lower level school that you could be happy with. There are two reasons for this:

1) If you turn out to write some really great essays you may be able to get a scholarship. You can then use the scholarship to negotiate with other schools
2) Many times an MBA at a 15-40 ranked school can accomplish the objectives that you would like to accomplish even though the pay on average is generally lower after graduation.

Now, as for you question of whether or not you'll be able to get in- that depends a great deal on your past experience, your essays, and how you spin yourself. Last year I had two French girls get into top 15 schools even though they only scored a 660 on the GMAT because they had great stories to tell. What makes a great story? One that shows that you're unique and that you will fit the culture of the school that your applying to.

Also, the fact that you have have 10 years of experience means that your decision to go to a one year MBA is a good one.

Finally, as to whether or not you should re-take the GMAT, it depends. Do you think you will still be able have the time to write good essays if you re-take the test ? It is true that most schools want you to have a higher math score (around 47 or 48 would be good).

Cheers!
Dan
