decision needed...round 1 or round 2

by s_meriam » Sun Jun 07, 2009 12:35 pm
I can get my applications and recommendations ready by September 2009 for the Round one deadlines. However, I don't believe I will have a good GMAT score by then. I am weak in the Quant section. I just started actual studying (in June).

My academic background

--BSc in Molecular Biology and Microbiology (GPA 3.31)
--BSc in Psychology with a minor in Computer applications (GPA 3.34)
--My overall GPA (last 60 hrs) 3.80 (After graduating w/ my second bachelor I went back to take a few courses as a post-bach)

My work background

--Teacher's Assistant in Computer lab at University (I was the only undergrad at that time who was teaching a computer lab)
--Worked on projects ranging from NASA to Disney---we mostly worked with US Govt. sponsored projects in the field of virtual reality
--Taught elementary school at local public schools as a sub
--Currently working for an international non profit (their focus is on education for children in child labor) I'm the only employed person they have in US and I manage all the different aspects of the organization--accounting/finance, advertising/pr, administrative etc

My extracurricular activities

Positions Held
--President of International Student Association @ Univ ( I was the only President in the organizations history til then who was not an International Student)
--Senator of Public Information and Student Organizations @ Comm College
--VP of Drama Club @ CC
--Representative/Student at Large for Student Appeals/Activities committee @ CC

In the Community
--Annual Halloween Parade--member of the Events Committee since 05
--Red Cross Volunteer since 05
--Hands On Vounteer since 06
--Shepherd's Hope Volunteer since 09 (they recently opened a branch close to my house in Nov 08)--They provide free health care to those w/o insurance

Fun Stuff
--I took dance classes for a year (2008)
--Currently learning how to fence (not that thing around your house silly)
--Went Tandem SkyDiving in 2003 (next will be white water rafting)

NOW TO MY QUERY...(sorry for long post but had to put out some stuff before asking my question)

PS My reason for MBA...in short...is that I want to learn the basics of managing a business so that in 10-15 yrs I can have my own social business (in the fields of education and health care) and an event management company (catering to events by organizations like AmFAR etc)

Hi--

It sounds like you have a compelling background and a good and interesting reason for going to business school (Stanford is strong in your area of interest, by the way; Yale is also good in not-for-profit).

My guess --as a former instructor-- is that you have enough time to get your quant score up by the time your scores have to be in. I suggest you study hard and then re-evaluate in, say, early August. My guess is that you will be pleased with your progress and on-track for a Round 1 deadline.

Good Luck--

Paxton
