Query about 700 for Entrepreneurial profile

by mocha » Tue Jun 09, 2009 8:25 am
Dear Gurus,

I have a GMAT score of 700 (Quant 46, Verbal 40). In my first attempt a month earlier I got 660. I am now very confused if I should go for the GMAT once more and target a 720-730. I don't think its realistic for me to get more than a 730 at the most !

I am an entrepreneur and my target schools are Stanford, LBS, Wharton, CBS, Insead, Sloan, Yale, . Yes, I need your advice to know if this is an unrealistic list.

I moved out of India as a Software engineer and shortly after did a course in UK Immigration Law and started a Business in London and opened a branch office in India after a couple of years.

Other aspects of my profile:

1. Work Ex: 7 Years ( 4 Yrs IT MNC's, recent 3 years Entrepreneur in Immigration)
2. Indian National, Set up a business in London in 2006 and still running the same. Started own company 3 months after relocating to the UK.
3. Lived in the UK for last 3+ years.
4. Masters Off Campus MCS program from UIUC, USA (done in India) GPA 3.56.

Please advise me. I really appreciate the time you take to give me your input.

Regards,
Mocha

GMAT Score:750

7 handle good

A seven handle on your GMAT is competitive. If you are really confident you can get a 720 or 730, that would obviously be even better, but a 700 definitley demonstrates you have the intellectual aptitude for an MBA program, which is mainly what they are seeking with the score (more jaded adcom members might say they also want to jack up their average). Plus there is always the risk that you will slip up and score lower. Remember, schools get all of your scores. If you can beat your 700 without a lot of extra effort, you might try again considering the top shelf schools you are targeting, but a 700 should be enough GMAT depending on how well you make a case with the rest of your application. If you are male, from India, with computer science background, you will be joining a throng of thousands of other applicants with similar backgrounds, so you will need to work hard to stand out. I think emphasizing your entrepreneurial stint in London and your innovative business with immigration is a great way to do that. Hope this helps.
