Career advise needed

by phluxescape » Sun Jun 14, 2009 12:26 pm
I'm 25 years old male currently working in tax department of fortune 100 company in new york city.

I have B.S in accounting from a top state university with 3.5 gpa and I recently passed all 4 parts of the cpa exam.

After undergrad, I started my career in midsize public accounting firm but after a year of working, I was laid off along with all other staff I employees due to economic downturn. To follow my goal of gaining audit experience for CPA req, I tried to look for a job in public accounting but failed to get the chance to interview.

After few months of searching I ended up in corporate tax department and it's been little more than a year since then.

My company pays for masters degree and I've been strongly encouraged to pursue a masters in tax or an mba degree.

What should I do at this point?. I recently took the gmat and scored 700.
Job is super easy and not challenging enough for me so life right now is easy and happy. But I know this isn't a good thing for a 25 year old just starting out his career..

Here are some paths I think I could take,

apply to Fordham, Pace, or Baruch for masters in tax or
apply to NYU for an MBA
After obtaining the degree, company requires me to stay for another 2years.

Or... go back to public accounting firm to get the exp. to be a CPA.

In this economy, I am not sure what would be the best decision.

And I know that I'll get a response like "Depends on what do you do with your career" Honestly, I'm not sure what I want to do. I've done audit and I've done tax. I don't necessarily want to do accounting work but I'm not qualified to get a job in a different field either. I do want to jump in and do something to improve my career.

So I guess what I'm looking for is "What would you do if you were me"

Thanks!
