Profile good enough to get a full ride ?

by tkrtkr » Wed Jun 06, 2012 2:46 pm
Hi Everyone,

I'm interested in doing an MBA, but only if I get a full scholarship at a decent school. I'd be grateful if you could take a look at my profile below and weigh in on what I need to fix/improve, so as to improve my chances at getting that full scholarship.

Age: 37

Nationality: USA (previously Indian)

Education: PhD / Computer Engineering / Top 10 US school / 4.0

GMAT: Not yet taken it,just started preparing for it.

Work Experience:
- 12 years working at a Tier-1 company, designing next generation computers.
- Hold multiple patents (>25). Presented papers at technical conferences
- PhD was sponsored by the company. Took me 4 years to complete, while continuing to work full time.
- Travelled to China several times on business (relevant later on)

Languages:
- I am a native speaker of English. I can also speak Hindi, Marathi and Konkani (Indian languages).
- Learned German for 3 years in high school, and still use it when I travel abroad.
- I'm taking evening college classes at a local community college, studying Mandarin. Finished one year, and can write/read/speak it well enough. Intend to do another year. Have been to China several times on business and my accent was very well received.

Extra-Curricular Activities/Volunteering:

- While at grad school, worked with the International Student office to host an English Language program for foreign students, to help them improve their English conversation skills ( I used to act as the moderator for my group). Continued my work with them even after I finished school.
- I love travelling - travelled to nearly 30 countries so far. I do it because I love to visit new places and meet new people (esp. like travelling to places where they don't speak English - makes communication more interesting)

Why an MBA now ?
- I feel like I've learned enough in the field of computer engineering, and am interested in getting into management.
- I want to move back to India and my PhD would not be of much use there.
- I am talented at languages, and get along well with people.
- My gut feeling tells me that engineering jobs in USA are just going to keep migrating to the Far East, so I might as well jump first.

- I'd like to find a job in S.E. Asia which combines my high tech skills, language skills, and people skills. Ideally I would like to be a VP/GM or manage a company's office in a country (and I think I would do a good job of it)

I have absolutely no experience in management, having been in technical positions all my working life. A general management degree is probably what I am aiming for (am open to suggestions however)

Schools:
I'm interested in applying to the following schools
- McCombs (UT-Austin) , since I live in Austin
- Tsinghua University (China)
- ???? (suggestions)

Qs 1) What do I need to do to improve my chances of getting a full scholarship ?
Qs 2) Which schools should I apply to ? (do I have enough to try for Stanford/HBS ? )
Qs 3) GMAT score to aim for ?
Qs 4) General management degree or some other specialization ?

Thanks a lot for any input

TKR

TKR,

Your odds of admission at top full-time schools are very small given your age. However, if a full-time program is your goal, you should focus on European or Asian schools, strive for a minimum GMAT score that shows the 80th percentile in both math and verbal, and is more open to applicants like yourself who are more technical than management experienced (your lack of leadership professionally and extracurricularly at your career point is a significant challenge for you). Texas McCombs will probably be a stretch for you, but given your career interest in Asia, Tsinghua should be a better bet for you. Perhaps also consider National U. Singapore, HKUST, and Nanyang.

I think and EMBA is more up your alley. 37 (meaning 39 by matriculation) is likely too old for full-time MBA programs.
