(E) Within artistic rivalry's boundaries lays a family sense

M confused between A and C.

(B) Within the boundaries of artistic rivalry lays a sense of family
(C) A sense of family lies inside of the boundaries of artistic rivalry
(D) A family sense lies within artistic rivalry's boundaries
(E) Within artistic rivalry's boundaries lays a family sense

I would go with A because our second part of the sentence after colon is dependent on the first part and the shared genetic inheritance, or accident, that enables musicians to make music should be near to the family...................wats the OA

I was between A and C, but chose A.

(C) A sense of family lies inside of the boundaries of artistic rivalry ...inside of just seems weird

- Lay take direct objects, but lie doesn't. So lie is the corret one here.
- The clause before the colon must make sense on its own
- The thing that is explanied or clarified must be as close as possible to the colon.
- For me... The shared genetic inheritance, or accident, that enables musicians to make music. refers to a sense of family and not to artistic rivalry

IMHO: A

Colon generally has three uses.

1. to introduce a list -
Joe chose his favorite foods for the picnic: fried chicken, cole slaw and apple pie.

2. To indicate a definition -
The orchestra played my favorite classical piece: Beethoven's seventh symphony.

3. to introduce a short quote (rare) -
Carol was fond of reciting her favorite bit of poetry: she walks in beauty as the night.

Semicolons are used when the author wants to combine two independent clauses in the same sentence without using a coordinating conjunction.

Wally raced home for dinner; he knew Betty was fixing his favorite meal.
