Since we are told that the distance covered by both the cars = 270000
Therefore,
15x + 8y = 12x + 10y
3x = 2y - (iii)

Substituting the value in (i),
5*(3x) + 8y = 27000 or 5*(2y) + 8y = 270000
18y = 270000
y = 15000

From eq (iii), we get x = 2y/3 = 2*15000/3 = 10000
Therefore (x + y) = 25000
