If y is an integer, is y = 0?

(1) When y is divided by an even integer the result is odd.
(2) y/6 is even.

The OA is the option A.

I am really confused here. May someone helps me, please? I'd appreciate it.

Given: y is an Integer

Question : is y = 0?

Statement 1: When y is divided by an even integer the result is odd.

Number = Divisor * Quotient + Remainder

Here, y = Even*??? + Odd = ODD

i.e. Y is not ODD as 0 is an even Integer hence

SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: y/6 is even.

i.e. y = 6*even = even

but y may be 0 or may be 12, hence
NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: option A


P.S. This QUESTION is NOT a GMAT STANDARD Question because in GMAT the statements can never contradict with each other even when taken independently whereas here they are contradicting because where first statement establishes that y is Odd the second statement contradicts and establishes that y is even hence this is considered a BAD example to practice GMAT Like questions.

I solved this DS question as follows:

(1) When y is divided by an even integer the result is odd.

This statement implies that y is not equal to zero, because if y=0 then when we divide y by any number (different from zero) we will get that the result is zero (even) and this contradicts what the statement says.

Therefore, y cannot be equal to zero. SUFFICIENT.

(2) y/6 is even.

Now, this statement tells us that $$\frac{y}{6}=2k\ \ \ \Rightarrow\ \ \ y=12k.$$ If k=0 then y=0, but if k=1 then y=12.

Hence, this statement is NOT SUFFICIENT.

Thus, the correct answer is the option A.
