ques

If all of the 20 bolts of fabric on a shelf are either 100 percent cotton, 100 percent wool or a mixture of cotton or wool, how bolts are cotton and wool mixtures?

1 Of 20 bolts, 18 contain some wool and 14 contain some wool--- sufficent

2 of 20 bolts 6 are 100 percent wool

So in second if 6 are 100 percent wool then gradually the rest will be cotton. So I marked d but the ans is A. I dont how

ques 2 If x, y and z are lengths of three sidestraingle is y>4?

1 z=x+4

2 x=3 and z=7

Here I marked e becoz it can be any value of there is always a rule that 7-3<x>7+3. But In ds it is applicable. Pls confirm. I think it is only applicable in Ps

1) z=x+4; we know that sum of two sides of triangles is greater than the third and also difference of two sides of a triangle is less than the third,

as x,y,z are three sides, therefore z-x<y; and we know that z=x+4; therefore 4<y;

hence 1 alone is sufficient to answer the question..!!!

2) x=3, and z=7;
similarly here we have z-x<y; i.e. y>4;
also x+z>y; y<10; hence y lies between 4<y<10;

therefore 2 alone is also sufficient to answer the question..!!!
hence answer should be D

Hi,

as you mentioned

The question asks how bolts are cotton and wool mixtures. However, if you see 2, it only tells of 100 percent wool. We don't know how many of those left over 14 bolts are 100 Cotton are mixture. Therefore, A is correct.

Let, 100 Cotton = C
100 Wool = W
Mixture of cotton and wool = M

Given, C+W+M = 20

Question : M=?

Statement 1: Of the 20 bolts, 18 contain some wool and 14 contain some cotton.
i.e. W+M = 18 and C+M = 14
we know, C+W+M = 20
i.e. C = 2, W=6 and M= 12
SUFFICIENT

Statement 2:Of the 20 bolts, 6 are 100 percent wool.
W=6
i.e. C+M=14
NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: option A
