(1) 2x+y=162x+y=16
(2) 5x+y=625

I imagine there's a typo in the question somewhere, because as written, the statements aren't consistent, and the answer is not D (it would be A).

It seems more likely the question is meant to say something like:

What is $$10^x 10^y$$ ?
1. 2^(x+y) = 16
2. 5^(x+y) = 625

Since 10^x * 10^y = 10^(x+y), the question is just asking us to find the value of x+y. From Statement 1 we know

2^(x+y) = 2^4

so x+y = 4, and from Statement 2 we know

5^(x+y) = 5^4

so again x+y = 4, and each Statement is sufficient alone.
