If the combined number of apples and oranges in a crate is 145, what is the ratio of apples to oranges in the crate?

1) There are 15 more apples than oranges in the crate.
2) If the number of oranges in the crate is increased by 35, the ratio of apples to oranges would be 4:5.

Say

the no. of apples = x and the no. of oranges = y

Thus, we have x + y = 145

We have to get the value of x/y.

Let's take each statement one by one.

1) There are 15 more apples than oranges in the crate.

=> x = y + 15. Thus, from x + y = 145, we have x = 80 and y = 65; thus, x/y = 80/65 = 16/13. Sufficient.

2) If the number of oranges in the crate is increased by 35, the ratio of apples to oranges would be 4:5.

=> (x + 35)/y = 4/5

5x + 175 = 4y.

So, we have two unique linear equations: 5x + 175 = 4y and x + y = 145; we can surely get the unique values of x and y, thereby x/y. Sufficient.

The correct answer: D

Hope this helps!
