Say the number of students in Section 1 is x and the number of students in Section 2 is y.

Thus, x + y = 84

Let's take each statement one by one.

(1) 2/3 of the students in Section 1 are female.

=> 2x/3 are females, but we do not know how many females are in Section 2. Insufficient.

(2) 1/2 of the students in Section 2 are male.

=> y/2 are males, thus, y/2 are females; however, we do not know how many females are in Section 1. Insufficient.

(1) and (2) together

Total number of females = 2x/3 + y/2

Even if we have the equation x + y = 84, we cannot get the value of 2x/3 + y/2. Insufficient.

The correct answer: E
