GIVEN: the roots/solutions are x = -3 and x = 2
Notice that x = -3 and x = 2 are solutions to the equation (x + 3)(x - 2) = 0
If we expand and simplify the left side of the equation, we get: x² + x - 6 = 0
So, the equation x² + x - 6 = 0 has roots -3 and 2
Compare this to x² + px + q = 0 to see that p = 1 and q = -6

What is the value of p + q?
p + q = 1 + (-6) = -5

Answer: A

The equation of this form with roots -3 and 2 is (x+3)(x-2) = 0 or x^2 + x - 6 = 0.
Thus, p = 1 and q = -6, and
p + q = -5.
Therefore, the answer is A.
