Given that Esperanza will be 35 years old in 6 years, she is 35 - 6 = 29 years now. Thus, she was 29 - x years old x years ago.

The correct answer: E

If Esperanza will be 35 years old in 6 years from now, then Esperanza must be 29 currently (because 29 + 6 = 35).
x years ago, she was x years YOUNGER, so we SUBTRACT x.
Answer = 29 - x

In other words, when structuring the algebra, use + and - respectively with older and younger, hotter and colder, bigger and smaller, or whatever increase and decrease context is in the question.

We can let E = Esperanza's age today, and create the equation:

E + 6 = 35

E = 29

Thus, she was 29 - x years old x years ago.

Answer: E
