typing problem

by ace_gre » Mon Jan 25, 2010 9:55 pm
Working together, John and Jack can type 20 pages in one hour. They will be able to type 22 pages in one hour if Jack increases his typing speed by 25%. What is the ratio of Jack's normal typing speed to that of John?
A) 1/3
B) 2/5
C) 1/2
D) 2/3
E) 3/5

I do not have the OA. Can someone help? Thanks

Lets assume below -:

John's speed = x
Jack's speed = y

so we will have 2 equations -:

eq1
x + y = 20

eq2 (increasing jack's speed by 25%)
x + 1.25y = 22

By solving the 2 equations you will get
x= 12
y= 8

hence ratio will be 8/12=2/3 (ANS D)
