In a certain year, the United Nations' total expenditures were $1.6billion. Of this amount, 67.8 percent was paid by 6 highest-contributing countries, and the balance was paid by the remaining 153 countries. Was Country X among the 6 highest-contributing countries?

1) 56 percent of the total expenditures were paid by the 4 highest-contributing countries, each of which paid more than Country X.
2) Country X paid 4.8 percent of the total expenditures.

Given that 67.8 percent was paid by 6 highest-contributing countries, we have 100 - 67.8 = 32.2 percent was paid by 153 countries,

We have to determine whether Country X is one among 6 highest-contributing countries.

Let's take each statement one by one.

1) 56 percent of the total expenditures were paid by the 4 highest-contributing countries, each of which paid more than Country X.

Considering that each of the 4 highest-contributing countries paid equally, thus, their contribution = 56/4 = 14%

=> 67.8 - 56 = 11.8% paid by 5th and the 6th county. Country X may or may not be one among 6 highest-contributing countries. Insufficient.

2) Country X paid 4.8 percent of the total expenditures.

Say Country X is the 6th highest-contributing country; thus, other 5 highest-contributing countries contributed 67.8 - 4.8 = 63%. It is possible.

However, say Country X is not among 6 highest-contributing countries; thus, other the 6 highest-contributing countries contributed 67.8. It is possible. No unique answer. Insufficient.

(1) and (2) together

From (1), we know that 11.8% paid by 5th and the 6th county. Keeping all the facts intact, Country X can be 6th, 7th or lower. Insufficient.

The correct answer: E

Hope this helps!
