Let the price of portable tape recorder = p


Statement 1 => During the sale, the price of the tape recorded reduced by 25% during a sale
p - ( 25% of p) = reduced price but the value of p is unknown so the target question cannot be answered
Statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT


Statement 2 => The price of the tape recorder after the reduction was $36
p - reduced value = $36. The price before the reduction is unknown so the target question cannot be answered, hence, statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT


Combining both statements together =>
From statement 1 => price was reduced by 25%
From statement 2 => reduced price = $36
(100% of p) - (25% of p) = $36
75% of p = 36
0.75p/0.75 = 36/0.75
p = $48
The difference in price reduction = p - reduced price
= $48 - $36
= $12
Both statements combined together ARE SUFFICIENT


Answer = C
