Target question => What is the ratio of the number of carrots to the number of celery sticks

Let the number of carrots = c; brussel sprouts = b; and celery sticks = s. Find c:s

Statement 1 => The number of carrots is 8/15 the number of Brussel sprouts
c = 8/15 b but there is no information on the value of s so statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2 => The number of Brussel sprouts is three times the number of celery sticks
b = 3s but there is no information on the value of c so statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining both statements together =>
From statement 1 =>
c = 8/15 b
From statement 2 => b = 35
To get c:s, substitute the value of b in statement 2 to b in statement 1
c = 8/15 * 3s
c = 8/5 s
1:8/5 c/s = 1 / 8/5 = 1 * 5/8 = 5/8
c:s = 5:8
Both statements combined together ARE SUFFICIENT

Answer = C
