OG #39

Scientist have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushroom and root like tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore of some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

A. Extending
B. Extends
C. Extended
D. It extended
E. Is extending

Can anyone explain to me why the correct answer is A? I have read the explanations, but it just doesn’t make sense. I understand that “spawned” is the word that we need to be parallel to, which would make “extended” the parallel verb (in my opinion). I don’t understand why “extending” is parallel to “spawned”. Can anyone please explain? Thanks?

Hi,

I think it is the "that is" which keeps the sentence in present continous.
All other explainantions welcome.

I would say Extending correctly parallels to living (organism) hence A

I chosed 'C' also.

answer A is correct. I think issue here is - it is not done with expansion...it is still expanding...
tricky one
