by gmattesttaker2 » Sun Jul 22, 2012 9:09 pm
Hello,

This question is from OG 13. P. 308:

What is the tenths digit in the decimal representation of a certain number?

1) The number is less than 1/3
2) The number is greater than 1/4

OA: E

I am not too clear with the explanation given in the book. Can you please assist? Thanks a lot.

Best Regards,
Sri

1) The number is less than 1/3
Here number <1/3 (1/3 =0.33333.....)
Hence examples of numbers less than 0.333... are 0.00, 0.10,0.20, 0.30. Tenths digit ranges from 0 to 3. Insufficient.

2) The number is greater than 1/4
Here number > 1/4 (1/4 = 0.25)
Hence examples of number greater than 0.25 are 0.26, 0.30, 0.40 etc. Again tenths digit ranges from 2 to 4. No single choice for "tenths" digit. Insufficient

Together:

0.25 < number < 0.33333...
Two examples of the number can be 0.26 or 0.30. Again tenths digit here has 2 values (2 and 3). Insufficient again.

Hence E.

Cheers!
