Starting from town S, Fred rode his bicycle 8 miles due east, 3 miles due south, 2 miles due west and 11 miles due north, finally stopping at town T. if the entire region is flat. What is the straight line distance in miles between Town S and T?

a) 10
b) 8 , root 2
c) root 157
d) 14
e) 24

Hi Pawan Ramnani,

I'm going to give you some 'hints' so that you can try this question again on your own:

1) Try drawing a picture 'to scale' - you'll have 4 lines: right, down, left, then up.
2) Draw a line connecting the starting point with the ending point. That line is the diagonal of a RIGHT TRIANGLE.
3) Using the drawing, you can determine the 'base' and the 'height' of that right triangle.
4) Use the Pythagorean theorem to find the diagonal.
