In a certain survey, 1,200 people were asked which they preferred, comedic films or dramatic films. If each respondent expressed a preference for one or the other, how many female respondents surveyed preferred comedic films?

(1) Seventy-four percent of the females preferred dramatic films.
(2) Sixty-four percent of the respondents preferred dramatic films.

The OA is E.

Total = M + F = 1200

(1) says, 74% of females = dramatic films
=> 26% of females = Comedy
0.26F = Comedy
But, we don't know the # of females, so insufficient

(2) says, 64% of respondents = dramatic
=> 36% of people = Comedy
0.36(1200) = Comedy
But we don't know the Male-Female breakup, so insufficient.

(1) and (2) together :
0.26F + x/100M = 0.36 * 1200 (x is %age of males who like comedy)
We don't know x here.

Hence, E is the correct answer.

Question : How many female respondent surveyed preferred comedic films?
1200 people were surveyed,
that is, Male (m) + Female (f)= 1200

Statement 1 : 74% of females preferred dramatic films.
Therefore, 26% of females preferred comedic films
But we don't know the number of females,
hence, statement 1 is INSUFFICIENT.

Statement 2 : 64% of respondents preferred dramatic films.
Therefore, 36% of people preferred comedic films
But we don't know the number of male and female,
hence statement 2 is INSUFFICIENT.
Combining statement 1 and 2 together:
$$26\%\ of\ f\ +\ \frac{x}{100m}=\ 0.36\ \cdot\ 1200$$
Where x is the % of males which preferred comedic films.
We cannot determine the value of x with this equation,
Hence, Option E is CORRECT.
