Statement 1: y² + 8y + 16 = 0
Factor to get: (y + 4)(y + 4) = 0
This means that y = -4
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: y < 0
This tells us that y can equal ANY negative value
So, statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: A
