Hi All,

We're told that Y is a positive integer. We're asked if Y can be expressed as the PRODUCT of two integers, each of which is greater than 1. This is a YES/NO question and can be solved by TESTing VALUES. To start, this question has a 'logic shortcut' built into it. For a number to be based on the product of two integers (that are both GREATER than 1), the number will NOT be a prime number. In other words, the question is asking "Is Y a number that is NOT prime?"

1) 47 <= Y <= 53
IF....
Y=47, then the answer to the question is NO
Y=48, then Y could be written as (2)(24) and the answer to the question is YES
Fact 1 is INSUFFICIENT

2) Y is EVEN
IF....
Y=2, then the answer to the question is NO
Y=48, then Y could be written as (2)(24) and the answer to the question is YES
Fact 2 is INSUFFICIENT

Combined, we know...
47 <= Y <= 53
Y is EVEN
The even numbers in that range are 48, 50 and 52. All 3 integers CAN be written as the product of two integers that are greater than 1 (2x24, 2x25 and 2x26, respectively), so the answer to the question is ALWAYS YES.
Combined, SUFFICIENT
