Hi All,

We're told that in a sample of associates at a law firm, 30 percent are second-year associates, and 60 percent are not first-year associates. We're asked for the percentage of the associates at the law firm that have been there for MORE than two years. Although this prompt has a bit of 'odd' wording, we're meant to assume that the 'sample' is actually a reference to ALL associates at the law firm. We can answer this question by TESTing VALUES.

IF there are 100 total associates...
30% = 30 are second-year associates
60% = 60 are NOT first-year associates. These 60 people include the 30 people who we already know are second-year associates, so there are 60-30 = 30 other people who are NOT first-year and NOT second-year associates. 100 - 60 = 40 are first-year associates.

Of the 100 total associates, there are:
40 first-year associates
30 second-year associates
30 associates who have been there LONGER than 2 years. Thus, the answer to the question is 30/100 = 30%

Final Answer: C

Since 60% are not first year, they are 2nd year or longer. Since 30% are 2nd year, then 60% - 30% = 30% have been there for longer than 2 years.
