Just like percentage, majority is singular noun grammatically, but in language use, the following noun often determines the form of the verb, through the processes of proximal and notional agreement.

Eg: A majority of voters are unhappy.

Similarly,

A majority of railway computers read or listen to music while traveling.

Hope that helps...

Is there a difference between "The majority and A Majority"

The majority of voter is unhappy.

Is that a correct sentence? The majority = singular?

As far as i know, there is no difference between "the majority of" and "a majority of" as there is between "the number of" and "a number of".

The majority of students entering law school this fall are expected to be women - This sentence is from GMAT prep test.

Coming to your sentence,
The majority of voter is unhappy

I am not sure this is a correct sentence because if there is only one voter, there is no question of majority. I think when we are using 'majority' with countable items/entities, the noun following "majority of" should be in plural form. I am not very sure though. Even I would like to know what the experts have to say on this question.

If "majority" has the same usage as "number", then "a majority" is plural and "the majority" is singular.
