I believe it is D.

A and B use the word 'which' and that might incorrectly refer to night instead of the entire action of the temperature dropping.

C uses the future tense "this will mean" when sentence is orginally in the past tense.

E "emerging from the soil" is ambiguous becuase we don't know if it is the frost or the shoots that are emerging from the coil.

I don't think this is a quality question.

A/B are out with improper usage of "which."

C is out because GMAT wouldn't allow a standalone "this."

D and E are out because the conditional of past tense "dropped" should be followed by "would" kill the...

So I'll pick F, none of the above.
Yep.

What is the source for this question

A. which will mean that the shoots emerging from the soil will be killed by the frost. - which refers to last night, eliminate
B. which will mean that the frost will kill the shoots emerging from the soil. - Same as A
C. and this will mean that the shoots emerging from the soil will be killed by the frost. - 'this' does not have any reference, eliminate
D. and the resulting frost will kill the shoots that are emerging from the soil. - Best among the worst
E. and as a result, the shoots will be killed by the frost, emerging from the soil. - 'the shoots will be killed by the frost' is between commas. Actually it should be out of the commas, since it is essential part of the sentence.
