Plan for GMAT

by ritz » Thu Mar 20, 2008 1:24 pm
Hi,

I am planning to appear for GMAT sometime in Apr 08 (3rd week may be).
Here is my background. I am an Indian engineer with good skills in math section. I have taught math for Indian MBA entrance exam for 6 months & the if you compare the level of difficulty between that exam's math & GMAT math, its like chalk & cheese. So i am ok with the math section of GMAT.

I am working on the Verbal section of GMAT. I am ok-good in RC, Ok-good in CR as well. My biggest problem seems to be SC. I am a dud in that. Its 50% correct & 50& incorrect. I have gone through the Manhatten SC guide. Its really good but the problem is, If I apply all the fundas given there on 1 single problem, it leaves very little time & gets very confusing at the same time. I dont know how much I will be able to improve on SC part of my GMAT preparation.

I gave GMATprep CAT1 2 weeks back w/o much of preparation & scored 720 in that. To my surprize, I scored about only 44 or 47(i expected more) in math (To my horror, 9 questions were wrong. I am targetting 3 errors at the most here) & about 39 in english. (OK i would say, if only i can improve on my SC huhhh...)

Also, i have not done anything on my AWA section as yet. does it really require a lot of practice?
Also, how much important this part is in my overall GMAT (i know it doesnt affect my score out of 800 but my overall personality to a B school is how much dependent on my AWA score?)

Any pointers to improve on following will be greatly appreciated..
1. SC (a must i would say)
2. a little bit of weaken the conclusion in CR
3. in RC, i tried the MGMAT's diagram approach, but i am honestly bad at that. Either I do not pay any attention to the later part of the paragraphs other than title paragraph (which causes me to miss the key words, the main advantage of the diagram approach) OR i pay too much attention to the paras, thereby taking lot of time.

this is the status of my preparation as of now. Your comments & suggestions will be appreciated.

thanks
Ritz

For your verbal, take some time to study the resources available here: https://www.beatthegmat.com/resources.html. There's lots of great material available to assist you.

If you are willing to invest a little cash into your prep, consider purchasing the Manhattan GMAT SC Guide. It's probably the best book on SC in the market, https://www.beatthegmat.com/books.html

With regard to AWA--this section is scored separately from the GMAT on a 6.0 scale. AWA is not considered to be critically important, but it's good to aim for a 4.0+ score.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the info...
I will definitely look at the material tht u suggested. However, I already have gone thru the manhatten sc guide n tryng to put those funda into application.
The difficulty is when I am solving the sc by those fundas, I sometimes get confused as to what is the error & apply too many fundas at the same time, resulting in a lot of time wastage & mostly, incorrect answer. So is there any other way out. Also, any pointer for help on RC as diagram approach doesn't seem to work for me
Thanks for your time...

If you're ever confused about any specific problem, I encourage you to ask the community for help! There are many friendly members here--as well as resident experts--to help you figure out problem.

With regard to RC, it's a difficult one to suggest a strategy for because it's really dependent on the person. Check out this resource to start: https://del.icio.us/beatthegmat/GMAT_Rea ... prehension

Thanks Eric,
I will look up the RC material that you suggested.however, for the SC, its not some specific prob that I can't solve. Its just that when I am solving the test, so many approach come to my mind which result in error sometimes. I think that will come with practice. I was just asking if there is anything wrong with the material I referred (mgmat sc, OG & kaplan)
Thanks

Gotcha, sorry for the misunderstanding. You are correct about understanding about gaining instincts for the correct approach on the GMAT--that comes with practice.

With regard to the material, you've select solid study materials!

To be honest, I did not plan to do official guide or manhatten. Just the kaplan. After coming to this forum, I realized that dng these 2 r must. I am really thankful & indebted to this forum for that. I will surely increase my participation here and with my prep institution teaching exp, I hope to prove useful to this forum. Thanx again Eric

OG should definitely be the centerpiece of your GMAT studies!

Thanks very much for your kind words. I look forward to seeing you around more in this community! Forum participation is indeed a great means to help prepare for the GMAT--teaching others (as you probably know) really forces you to understand the concepts well.

Good luck!
