Need explanation for a question

by lj88 » Sun Feb 10, 2013 3:24 pm
Hello,

I need help with the below question:

Human exposure to even low levels of nuclear radiation dramatically increases the likelihood of contracting some form of cancer. According to a research study involving a town near a former nuclear testing site, no person who resided in the town during the testing - which occurred more than 60 years ago - and who was under the age of 10 during the testing lived beyond 50 years of age. However, some of the town's former residents who are now over 50 years old are cancer survivors who resided in the town during the nuclear testing.

If the information provided is true, which of the following must on the basis of it also be true about the town that is the subject of the research study?

(A) Some people who resided in the town during the nuclear testing do not remember the testing
(B) The cancers contracted by the town's cancer survivors were not caused by exposure to nuclear radiation
(C) Some of the town's former residents living today were over 10 years of age during the nuclear testing
(D) The nuclear testing resulted in the emission of lower levels of radiation than initially believed
(E) Some of the town's residents died before turning 50 years of age due to causes other than cancer

Could you explain why the answer to this question is B?

Thank you!

Please identify the source when you have it available.

I did find another discussion of this question. It appears that this may be from Princeton Review.
The official answer is listed as C. It appears that B is mistakenly listed as the official answer. It is also true that the explanation given by the source appears to match choice C not B.

Does C match better with your thinking?

Hi,

thank you for your reply. the question is from Peterson's Master the GMAT.
and yes, i had chosen C at first but the answer in the book was B. and the explanation in the book seemed more applicable to choice C.

thank you again for the clarification!

So the other post I read was mistaken as to the source. Peterson's not Princeton. But the rest is true...probably just an editing error when they made the answer and explanation key.
