Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large.

(A) to survive
(B) of firms to survive
(C) for surviving
(D) for survival
(E) for firms' survival

if you see the occurence of ' such firms' in the later part of the sentence, half your problem is solved.
'such firms' need to refer to something.

A)to survive [ no referrent for ' such firms']

(B) of firms to survive [ correct!]

(C) for surviving [ no referrent for ' such firms']

(D) for survival [ same error as in C]

(E) for firm's survival [ same problem as in C. firm's survival is different from firms to survive]

Hope this helps!
