What should I focus on?

by yhaguy » Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:22 am
Hi all,

I'm going to be taking the GMAT at the end of the week, and I seem to be stuck at around ~630 in my practice tests: my current scores are:

Test: Score Q V
Manhattan1 630 44 32
Manhattan2 650 42 37
Manhattan3 620 40 35
Manhattan4 630 43 33
Manhattan5 640 43 35
Manhattan6 640 44 34
GMAT Prep1 620
GMAT Prep2 590
PowerPrep 680

This averages out at 633, Q42, V35.

Does anyone have an idea of what to focus on in the next? My gut feeling is that I should just focus on the Quant for the next couple of days. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful!

Hello, yhaguy:

Getting close to crunch time! I love the adrenaline that builds as you get close to a big event like this.

If you only have a few days to go, I'd recommend that you turn your focus to:

1) Are there any areas on either side that you know are particularly weak? Do you tend to struggle mightily with one concept area or question type? If so, you may want to put a few hours into trying to significantly improve your understanding there.

2) More probably, you'll be best served to use the next few days to shore up the types of "silly" mistakes you tend to make. Go back to those practice tests and find any questions that, when you see why you got them wrong, make you cringe. If you can give yourself reminders to not make that mistake, you'll probably derive more value in these waning days of study from minimizing the points that you're giving away with mistakes than maximizing any "new" points you'd gain by "learning more".

Best of luck - embrace the pressure...adrenaline is one of those things that makes life great!

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the reassuring comments - sounds like a plan! I think silly mistakes are costing me dearly, and more often than not, I'm panicing and skipping questions, which I could have otherwise answered. Looking at the "GMAT Scoring Rubic", I am just below the quant and verbal scores on each side, which I think maybe limiting my overall score:

Just need to improve a teeny bit on both areas - or so I hope!

I'll post my final score on this thread once completed!

Cheers!
