RE-Take...Strategy HELP

by dorkitto » Thu Oct 04, 2007 3:22 pm
I took the GMAT on the 22nd of September and ended up with a 660 (42Q and 38V). I posted my exam experience (I had to rush through half of Quant because I drank too much gatorade) on the " I just beat the GMAT' forum and I am retaking it because I do not feel that my math scores do not show my ability. I consistently scored between 45 and 48 in Quant on my practice test.

How do you suggest I go about preparing for a re-take scheduled for October 27. I struggle with coordinates and sometimes inequalities. Any tips on books to buy? :? I'm going for 49 and above on quant and 40 on verbal.

Thanks

Sorry to hear about your experiences drinking too much gatorade--sounds like you're not going to repeat that mistake again. :)

Before you resume your studies, I would think about doing a serious self assessment on your previous studies and why you think you scored below your expectations. It sounds like you've already picked up on some specific weaknesses--coordinates and inequalities--but was there anything else that consistently troubled you?

Next, I would write down the topics that have caused problems for you in the past and review your previous practice problems/practice tests. When you come across a topic or problem that consistently confuses you--write it down on a flashcard. Pretty soon you'll have a nice set of flashcards taylored to your needs, which you should review daily.

If you need some new material to study for quant, check out the book recommendations here: https://www.beatthegmat.com/wiki/

This should be a good start for you. Best of luck!

Seconding what Eric said. Go over your recent practice tests and homework problems and really understand WHY you missed the things you missed. Once you understand, you can do something about the weaknesses that led to those errors, whether based on fundamental knowledge, or pacing problems, or careless mistakes, or what have you.

Thanks Eric & Stacy. I have been working on OG 11 over again and I have taken one paper test. I ended up with a score of 680..a little improvement but still not impressive. I have postcards from my first take and I am making more as I study.

..I have an appointment for Saturday the 27th..I will post an update as the date approaches.
