hi All,

i have given my GMAT recently. Done my math fairly well . Got 48. i was with the impression of not doing math session well and as a result i ruined verbal session. i spoiled the 1st 10 questions in verbal . Overall i got 540. i am completed devastated.
i am planning to give GMAT again around Dec.

Now that i have 2.5 months in hand i want to plan properly , keeping my job in mind .
i am aiming for 700+( big dream ah ??.. i know , but still possible rgt ) i have few concerns:

1) i have very good educational back ground . done by btech from IIT and have work exp of 3.5 yrs .
2) Which score will be considered ? Do the univs take the average of the two gmat tests or the highest score?
3)i need Suggestions for Verbal , how to start , how to practice
a) the study material i used : og12 and online material .
b) i have done all the SC questions from og , but did not complete CR ( as i have been scoring well in this session ) and did not do RC ( because , i thought each RC is different . i brushed through the type of RC questions )

c) RC is my biggest weak point . i never understood what went wrong .i mark the option which seems to be correct and i used to analyze so many times from all the tests i took but in vain .it will be great if you suggest some material to improve in RC
d) Now that i dont want to take any chance ( after hitting this career bottom score of 540 in GMAT main exam :( ). i am seeking a proper guidence .

Also i gave the following tests:
Manhanttan
Kaplan CD
Princeton Review
GMAT prep

my fault is that i did not use any proper book material for the subjects i am weak at .

i want to apply for the following Univs 2nd Phase -( Deadline 5th Jan )
Wharton
University of Chicago
MIT

will it be okay if i take the GMAT on Dec 23rd . i still have 7days left for the deadline . Will the Universities still consider my application or will it be too late?

Please help me in planning properly , so that i could get ,not good but great score in GMAT

thanks
tanish

:-) I am planning to apply to the same univs. and that too for Rd2.

I haven't taken the GMAT, but my score on the GMATprep was just 580. I am also hoping to shoot for a 700+ score. I think MGMAT guides would really help you out. I have been using them since a month or so. They explain the concepts in a very methodical way.

By the way, I don't think univs care when you take the GMAT as long as you have it before the date of the deadline. Some of them let you submit unofficial scores (self-reported). GMAT is definitely important, but is not the only factor. Schools take a holistic approach, considering every facet of your application. So don't neglect your essays and recommendations.

I spoke with few admissions directors at a MBA fair couple of days ago and they all mentioned that they take the highest score only.

Do you think 700+ is possible? I was told more than 100 points are really hard within a couple of months time-frame. Please share any tips you find along your journey.

Good luck and hope to see you in the Fall 2011 class. :-)

Your quant is solid, I wouldn't bother wasting any extra time on it with a raw score of 48, other than doing problems here and there so you don't get rusty. I would focus probably 75-80% on verbal because the verbal is really what helps your score. I'd recommend getting either the MGMAT SC or PowerScore SC Bible (I actually went over both and both has its strong and weak points imo), the MGMAT Reading Comp book, and the PowerScore Critical Reasoning Bible. If you go through these books and put your time into it, you should easily get the score you want by Nov.

As for waiting until Dec. 23rd to do your apps, I would definitely leave at least a solid month to do apps as 7 days is probably not going to cut it. If I were in your shoes I'd schedule the exam in early to mid November, bang the test out, and then do the apps in late Nov. or early Dec.

Good luck! You can do it! The biggest issue with verbal (after understanding how to do it of course) is just time management. Make sure you do lots of practice problems using a timer. Also, the BIGGEST thing that's helped me overall is just taking notes for RC and CR. The funny thing is, I don't even read the notes I take, but when I started to take notes, I just do not zone out like I used to. It cut down on my errors and time wasting. Until Oct. 16th for me!
