The BEATTHEGMAT FLASH CARDS (GREAT RESOURCE BTW) state that None and No One are always singular. I agree that "No One" should be singular but can't None be plural too?

Ex.

"None of the people IS going to the beach"

That can't be right. Can someone please explain?

None is a SAMAN word which can be singular or plural depending on what follows it.

The SAMAN words are

Some
All
Most
Any
None

Ha, I had the same question when I saw that in the flash cards. It says none is singular even when it sounds plural right? Personally I prefer to just know the rule.

I looked it up and at the time and found some good sources explaining the difference. Sadly I'm not seeing great explanations now. But yes, as was posted above, it's one of those words that depends on the circumstance.

None is SANAM word ..None is opposite of Any.
