"In any enterprise, the process of making or doing something is ultimately more important than the final product."
Discuss the extent to which you agree...
I completely agree with the issue stated that process of making or doing something is more important than the final product. However, the end product for which these processes are to be followed also should be a quality one. Lets further discuss the issue in detail in the following paragraphs.
For any product it is very important to follow a standardized process of manufacturing to be successful in the long run. Once a standard is defined for the product and a process followed religiously, the end product is bound to be high quality one. Hence, not only the quality but the process followed in making the product is important.
Lets take an example of a product development strategy, in which the sole aim of the company is of developing a product without taking into consideration the small functional processes which should be accounted for. For example, during mass production of a product like shaving razors, it might be a good idea to initally have enough knowledge about demand of such a product. Once the company has certain numbers about demand and their target market, it becomes easier for them to manage inventory and to order raw materials. If such smaller functions are not taken into consideration according to a standardized process and the company devotes all its energies in the manufacturing of the shaving razor, they might not achieve what they really aimed for.
Software development is a great example of an industry where following a process and a standard way of functioning cannot be emphasised enough. With technology advancing each and everyday and Web 2.0 giving the users a unique experience, the possibilities of product development are immense. Users nowadays expect lot while using a software product and this makes it very important for software developers to be abreast of the latest tools and technologies to serve their clients with the best experience possible. As the whole process of software development is very dynamic and any change in user requirements can trigger a major overhaul in the system, it is of utmost importance that software development teams follow the standardized processes such like Agile to have minimum impact on their development schedule, while providing their best outputs.
Finally, I will conclude that taking into consideration the examples given above like understanding the market needs for a particular product and creating a solid baseline before starting product development is very important for companies to survive in todays volatile market. Hence, the process of making or doing something is more important to create a very good final product.
