publisher of The Mercury - Argument

The following appeared in an announcement issued by the publisher of The Mercury, a weekly newspaper:

"Since a competing lower-priced newspaper, The Bugle, was started five years ago, The Mercury's circulation has declined by 10,000 readers. The best way to get more people to read The Mercury is to reduce its price below that of The Bugle, at least until circulation increases to former levels. The increased circulation of The Mercury will attract more businesses to buy advertising space in the paper."

Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.


In above argument, author claims that the Bugle is a lower priced newspaper and it was started five years ago. As a result of that The Mercury's circulation has gone down by 10,000 readers and hence they planned to reduce its price lower than that of The Bugle to increase the circulation till former levels. It also attracted advertiser to buy more advertising space. However, I do not agree from above statement. The author has failed to analyse to get the actual reason for decline of readers.

The reduction of The Mercury's price is one of the parameter that it may attract readers. But the publisher of The Mercury may have to suffer from loss of income as a result of reduction in price. I believe they should decrease the price upto a limited extent so that it does not affect mush on the budget of the publishing company.

The content or presented material plays major role in any newspaper. The purpose of newspaper is to publicise the news by as much as putting it on paper. The news what they publish should be recent and interesting one, emphasis should be on major news-articles may be national or international rather than local, and it should be acceptable to all children, adults and old citizen. The publisher should also think into language for newspaper. They should provide newspaper in national and international language rather than local language. As a result of that the more buyers will be attracted to it.

For attracting advertiser, publisher should provide better services and easy accessibility. Publisher can also build web portal so that adviser can select the advertising space online and upload his or her images online and for payment they should have a good payment gateway facility that accepts all types of credit and debit card, and also one can pay from net-banking. Publisher can also build a search engine to search past or current news on their web portal.

Therefore, I would suggest that the publisher of The Mercury have to focus on improvement of other areas such as quality and style of presentation, emphasis should be on major news-articles and language may be national or international rather than local , advertising space and advertiser accessibility rather than just on reduction of price. They should also focus on availability of news on web portal.
