Scientists studying the region are divided over how much of the temperature shift is due to the region's large natural variations and how much is being driven by the global buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases, like those emitted by tailpipes.

A: is being driven by the global buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases, like
B: the global buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases drive, such as
C: the global buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases drive, like
D: is driven by the global buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases, such as
E: is being driven by the global buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases, such like

OA: D

I have eliminated A, C and E. what about B and D?
I selected B but it is wrong. Solution talks about parallelism.

Is this the construction if I follow OA?

Following is the source from which the question has been framed.

Scientists studying the region are divided over how much of the Arctic shift is from the region's large natural variations and how much is being driven by the global buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases emitted mainly by smokestacks and tailpipes.

First is the such as/ like split. Clearly, for giving examples we should use Such as and not Like. This rules out A,C and E

B is just awful. "rapping greenhouse gases drive, such as "

This leaves us D, D cleverly removes the word "being" and correctly uses "such as"

As D is correct. Lets put it into original Q.

Is above sentence means as

Scientists studying the region are divided over how much of the temperature shift is due to the region's large natural variations and how much of the temperature shift is driven by the global buildup of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases, such as those emitted by tailpipes.

Can you please correct my understanding?

In actual meaning "how much of the temperature shift" comes at both places.

Prasad bhai, I know u eliminated A,C,E based on the fact that examples are to be used with "such as" and NOT with like.

Agreed. Having said that we are left with B & D.

Original senetence intends to mean that temperature shift has taken place due to natural variations and global buildup of gases.

"is driven by " signals the passive voice structure in D.

This is a good way to see the parallelism at work here! You're right that the actual meaning includes "how much of the temperature shift" twice -- the "of the temperature shift" is simply implied in the second usage. Just to offer another way to look at this parallelism:

Scientists are divided over how much the temperature shift X and how much (the temperature shift) Y.

We need another verb to remain parallel with "is due to," so we can eliminate B and C, which begin with noun phrases (the global buildup). As several people have noted, A and E have the awkward "being" as well as the incorrect like/such as split.

the posters on this thread have missed what is probably the most black-and-white way to eliminate choice (b): SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT

look at choice (b) again:
the global buildup (of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases) drive
"global buildup" is a singular subject.
"drive" is a plural verb.
wrong.

also, the "such as" modifiers should be placed as close as possible to the noun describing the category -- in this case, "heat-trapping greenhouse gases". in choice (b) there are about five miles of words between "heat-trapping greenhouse gases" and "such as", rendering the sentence unreadable.

here's another example:
"modern movies are often punctuated with selections of centuries-old music, such as Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik."
--> CORRECT (note that "such as" is attached directly onto "centuries-old music")

"selections of centuries-old music are common in modern movies, such as Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik."
--> INCORRECT (this suggests that Eine Kleine Nachtmusik is a movie)
