Hello guys. For the past month now, I have become highly motivated into my studies at university and I want to pursue a career in management at a civil engineering company. I need all the guide I can get to keep me on track. I have been so motivated for the past couple of weeks that I actually bought the OG books from someone and started studying for GMAT already!

Okay so let me begin by first telling you my whole history (SORRY IF I'M MAKING YOU READ SO MUCH)

I am currently 19 years old. I don't attend the best university for my program but it is not all that bad. There has definitely been a lot of downs for the past two years as I have been on probation twice consecutively. If i fail to meet my probation contract this semester, I will be kicked out of University.

With that said, let me give you my academic background. First year of uni, I enrolled in a 4 year Civil engineering program. I would like to think I have strong math and physics skills but the main reason why I struggled during the first year is lack of motivation. Anyway, I have managed to boost my gpa from a 1.52 to a 2.6. Furthermore, I have a 3.78 GPA this semester because I am taking things very seriously. To also add to my potential, I worked during the four months of my summer after first year and also enrolled into Calculus II and Physics II. I managed to pull off an A and a C respectively. I never attended any lectures or tutorials because I was working 50 hours a week.

The reason why I had such a low gpa is because I got cocky and took seven engineering courses in the second semester of first year and it was my first time moving out of my house and I got caught up in the partying and stuff. Anyway, with that said, I failed 3 / 7 courses that I took second semester of my first year. However, my father did not know and he is also a civil engineer who works for a fortune 500 company. With his help, I was given a summer position at the company he worked for (Very reputable in the world (ESP. in USA), they are America's leading federal contractor and does a lot of work for the American Military Defense System). I kept track of the hours I worked for the reputable company. I put in 816 hours of work and made well over 17 grand in just four months. With this, as I mentioned above, I managed to pull off an A in calculus and C in physics. Reason why I got a C in physics is because of absences in tutorials that were worth 8% of my total grade. Due to two probations, my program is now five years in length instead of four years (two of which are completed) so that means I have three years left of school to bring my CGPA to atleast a 3.2 and as high as a 3.6

Anyway, I was very upset that I was not able to meet probation contract the first time and I was put on probation again and failure to meet it this time would require me to withdraw out of university. Also, since my father found out, he has lost faith in me and understandably he very much questions my success. So ever since then I set out a mission to prove my whole family wrong.

This semester I have a 3.78 GPA and I have solid interpersonal skills that allowed me to land a job at Canadian National Railway (canada's largest railway) almost a monopoly. This job also pays great and looks very good on my resume.

Furthermore, since I have set my goal to prove my family wrong. I have been making youtube videos of all the courses I am acing this semester and making tutorial videos/guidelines for future undergrad students. This is one of my projects. I also have a hobby in web designing. I made my first website when I was fifteen years old. Right now, I am developing a portfolio site that will contain a blog to post my new work experience working as a Junior Engineer position at CN Railway and also it will contain my past experience with the fortune 500 company (pictures/videos/qualifications/duty/etc.) and other things about myself. I am also joining the Engineering Student Society at my university and if things go my way, I can become the president of it in two years (maximum).

I have been researching all sorts of websites to see if I stand a chance at HBS. It is my dream and I want to go there so badly and I will do whatever it takes from this point on to prove my family wrong.

So it will be very much appreciated if any advice/guideline is provided. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read this.

PS. I have already started studying for the GMAT. I want to get a score in the 750+ area. I know I can do it because I have strong arithmetic skills. I used to do random multiplications in my head for fun and I read the gmat book / gmat forums whenever I have free time instead of partying and whatnot.

Thanks again!

Canada,

Whatever you set your mind to, I'm sure you can achieve.

Your GPA and probation issues are going to be big hurdles at HBS. Your competitive response should be to focus on absolutely crushing it in some other area. That is, you need some business success to really hang your hat on. You need something big enough that people would say, he started Teach for America, I don't care what his GMAT was.

You need to reach deeper in yourself to find your motivation to go to b-school. "To prove my family wrong," is not a compelling reason. What inspires you to greatness? Surely it is not spite. Look for another emotion.

There is nothing in your essay that says "Harvard" to me in particular. Why have you picked that institution? I get the HBS brand recognition, but your choice feels arbitrary. If you're serious about B-school, I think you need to be more pragmatic about your chances and your objective. "HBS or bust" feels shallow to me. What are you really looking for from a school? I'll bet there are plenty of institutions that could offer a more compelling offering to you than HBS.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and reply,

Actually its not more about my family but its more about myself and my willingness to enter HBS or any top 10 B-school. I just feel that I could be much better off with some management skills as I recently discovered my eagerness to always be a leader no matter where it is. Would a 750+ on my gmat suffice? Also, I just finished my first year so I have three more years to bring back my gpa. I have done well this semester and I am predicting my gpa will be over 3.2 by the end of my program.

Also, I have started a not-for-profit organization to reduce poverty in Bangladesh (where I was born, I came to Canada at the age of 9). I have donated over $6,000 so far to help out as much as 20 families (Buying cows for them so that they can bring in revenue for their families and keep them going). This is a project I just started and I am starting to receive help from others and the organization is expanding.

I also worked with a fortune 500 company (URS Corporation, one of the biggest engineering design firms in the world) and now I am working for Canadian National Railway for the next four months as a Junior Engineer (Federal Government Job).

Would the top b schools take my first year flaws that much against me? Wouldn't they like to see someone who has had a terrible set back and put himself into a hole and crawled out of it?

Thanks again.
