Because chickens lack teeth

by sumanr84 » Fri Jun 04, 2010 3:09 am
Because chickens lack teeth, they need another way to break apart the food they eat before reaching the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they swallow are used to grind their food.

A) before reaching the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they swallow are used to grind their food.
B) before it reaches the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed is used to grind their food.
C) before it reaches the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they swallow are used to grind their food.
D) before reaching the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed is used to grind their food.
E) before it reaches the stomach, and for this reason, chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed are used to grind their food.

Some thoughts:

The main difference between C and E is usage of tense.

The reason for choosing E:
=> If the chickens have not yet taken stones into the stomach via the throat, how can they use those stones to grind foods?

Yet, there is a confusion. I think C is almost right. I am not convinced with my explanation in favor of E. C can also be right answer in the sense that chickens usually take stones into the stomach to grind. So, C is right.

Experts are earnestly requested to end the debate.

Thanks.

I think in this case, "chickens have a gizzard in which stones they have swallowed are used to grind their food." is to describe how the gizzard work, which uses the stones that chickens swallow first and using these stones to grind their food. Since it's not a parallel comparison, but rather a description of process, I agree that varying tense is necessary to clearly describe the process.

The present perfect tense is used to describe an ongoing action (i.e., one that began in the past and continues into the present). I don't really know much about chickens, so if the chickens swallow new stones after every meal, C would be correct. But I think it makes more sense to assume that the stone-swallowing is a regular activity that began in the past and either continues to occur, or continues to have an impact, in the present; in that case, the present perfect is correct: "have swallowed." That's what makes E a better choice than C.
