IMO B.

We are speaking of two events here.

Notebooks that were sold in United Stated (simple past) had been manufactured in China (Manufacturing happens before sales an earlier past action hence past perfect).

All other option have tense issue.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.
