Three thousand families live in a certain town. How many families who live in the town own neither a car nor a
television set?
(1) Of the families who live in the town, 2,980 own a car.
(2) Of the families who live in the town, 2,970 own both a car and a television set.

I got the answer as C. Could someone please confirm the answer. Thanks.

Agreed, believe the correct solution is E

Statement (1) tells us 20 families in the town don't have a car.
Insufficient by itself.

Statement (2) tells us 30 families in the town don't have a car or a television set (could be one, the other, or both).
Insufficient by itself.

Statement (1) and (2) together tell us that out of the 30 families that don't have a car or a television set, there are 20 families that definitely do not have a car. We are not given any input on the number of families that don't own televisions, therefore, insufficient together.

My answer is E.

The two statements are obviously insufficient by themselves. Combining the given information in the question and the two statements, we have:

n(Total) = n(cars only) + n(car and TV) + n(TV only) + n(neither car nor TV)
3000 = (2980 - 2970) + 2970 + n(TV only) + n(neither car nor TV)
n(neither car nor TV) = 20 - n(TV only)
