Which is right and why? Can someone explain?

In my understanding both the sentences written by you are correct because if it would have been a comparison between two students then "taller" would have been used but the sentences seems to indicate that the comparison is among more than two students................

IMO they are both OK.

Check - Superlative form when comparing more than 2 things
Check - Among when comparing more than 2 things

Although the number of students is not specified I believe it's ok....
