Getting a Canadian MBA to work in the US?

by bann7560 » Mon Oct 07, 2013 5:59 am
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any experience/opinions on attaining an MBA in Canada and how it looks to potential employers in the US?

A bit about me.
I'm originally from Canada and graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a BBA. I currently work in NYC, but it's hard to use my current employer's hiring experience as a comparison to future employers as they recruited directly from my university (which I know is not typical).

I know going to a top school in the US would look better to prospective US employers. I'm more so wondering if getting an MBA from a top Canadian school would add any benefit to my resume to US employers?
Do US companies consider Canadian MBA's to be valuable or would I be wasting my time and money?

Motivations for getting the Canadian MBA
1) Less expensive
2) Could potentially finish it in 8 months (I'm looking at the Schulich School of Business at York University).
3) GMAT score (I will realistically be in the 650-670 range when I write in a few weeks, which I know rules me out for a number of the top US programs but should get me into any Canadian school).

Ultimately I don't know if I want to end up in Canada or the US in the long term. But in the short term I'd like to keep my options open for working in NYC.

If I go back to Canada for my MBA would I essentially be buying a one way ticket?

Thanks in advance for your advice.
